First Fax

Have you ever looked inside a fax machine?
Well, don't bother. It's just a whole mess of wires, rollers and cogs in there. Yes, the insides of a fax machine are really rubbish to look at.

Thank goodness, then, that they are so useful. Otherwise, what would be the point of them?

Fax machines are used to send pictures through the phone lines - lines usually restricted to talking.
They accomplish this seemingly impossible task by turning pictures into beeps and chirps - like R2D2 - and then shouting these sounds down a phone, to another fax machine. If you've ever answered a call from a fax machine, and tried to understand it, you're an idiot.

I don't know who invented the fax machine. And nor do I care. What I care about is this: What was the content of the first fax?

And I discovered the answer!

The first fax was a picture of a smiley face with a beard. Experts believe it was supposed to be Phil Colins, but with a beard.
