They were invented by the Ancient Romans in 500BC. They called them 'togas'!

Togas were very cheap, since they were made out of bed sheets, or old carpets.
The most expensive toga was the one that Julius Caesar got stabbed in. It sold on the Roman equivalent of ebay for 500 denarii!

But the most expensive toga isn't worth as much as the most expensive dress. It's not even in the same league!

The most expensive dress was the one worn by the Queen Elizabeth of England during her coronation in 1952.
It was made of purest gold, and the buttons were made from pearls.
Also, there was £100 in the back pocket.
